Day 3 in Haiti

"I'm glad to hear that LEATHERMAN tools are useful everywhere.  I've been using mine in Vietnam where Chau and I are visiting her relatives."
-Tim Leatherman

Randy Huebner uses a Leatherman tool he borrowed from Chief Resident Getho to measure patients' humerus'. Today we are working at OFATMA. This patient was injured in a RTA last November. His Injuries included a tibia, femur, and humerus fracture.  Initially he was taken to Cabrel in the Dominican Republic which is a SIGN program. Surgeons at OFATMA were surprised to see his femur. Fixed with a SIGN nail. Today we will perform humerus surgery with SIGN nail. Dr. Zirkle will assist Haitian surgeons Max and Getho.

Dr. Getho and SIGN CEO Jeanne Dillner
taking a ride to visit St. Francis Hospital.
Dr. Max inserts a SIGN nail.
There is a shortage of trained surgical nurses so the residents must perform that task as well. Chief Resident Getho assists and hands off instruments. Here he is shown removing the bone from the flutes of the reamer to be used for a bone graft.
Dr. Max and Dr. Zirkle discuss case while prepping the patient for surgery.
OFATMA recycled the trays made up by Portland SIGN.
Now they can be used for SIGN kits.
